Seoul: City Hotels and Accommodation
Many people choose to stay in the heart of Seoul, which is located around 52 km / 32 miles from Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN). Hotels in the city tend to target different groups of visitors, with accommodation in the Kangnam district, close to the Han River, often appealing to travellers on business trips. However, visitors wishing to experience true city life and get a feel for the sights and sounds should be sure the stay in central Seoul.
Hotels is Seoul often charge on a room basis rather than per person, so this can be a good way of saving money, although this is not always the case. The best option for budget accommodation in Seoul comes in the form of the Olympic Parktel Hostel along Pang-i-dong. However, just a short trip from the city is a range of cheap accommodation in more rural areas of Seoul, with many households happily renting out rooms in their own houses to visitors. This type of lodging is known as 'minbak'.
Guest houses in Seoul are also particularly affordable and traditional Korean inns often simply feature mattresses or similar bedding directly on the floor, rather than more conventional Western-style beds. In the winter the underfloor heating ensures a good nights' sleep.
Many mid-range hotels and more mainstream accommodation can be found in the Sound Station area, although rooms here tend to be rather basic. Popular hotels in Seoul are also located around T'apkol Park, in the Kwanghwamun area, close to the City Hall and around Shinch'on, which is known for its lively nightlife.
